About: Photographs made in the summer of 2015, at a former shikumen neighborhood undergoing redevelopment. Shikumen, "stone gate," in Mandarin, is a traditional Shanghainese home dating back to 1842 and is architecturally influenced by both Western and Chinese styles. The shikumen style homes were once common in Shanghai, totaling to well over 9,000 structures, and are generally comprised of two- or three-story townhouses with a high brick wall bordering the front yard--hence the name. In recent years, shikumen style homes have begun to disappear in the name of both private and government development.
